Oil Rigging Jobs

Roughnecks Jobs

Roughnecks jobs are basically the entry level jobs on an oil rig. Roustabout is also an entry level job and the two are usually interchangeable. The reason that these jobs are entry level are because they are manual labor jobs and usually require very little or no skill set. No previous experience is necessary to apply for a position.

That said, these positions on an offshore oil rig are very important and help to keep the operations running smoothly and efficiently.

The job of a roughneck can be tough. Conditions can be really difficult to work in. Wind, rain and snow brings many problems, as does extremely high temperatures, and the hours can be long and laborious.

It may seem at times that you get the rough end of the stick compared to some of the more skilled oil rigging jobs, but the two most important factors that you need to remember are: Firstly, you are maintaining that oil rig so it can run smoothly and efficiently. Without roughnecks and roustabouts, the skilled workforce would not be able to carry out their duties of procuring oil and the whole operation could be in jeopardy. Secondly, remember that when you have secured a position as a roughneck on an oil rig, you will then be in a position to work hard and move up the proverbial ladder.

The average shift is usually eight – twelve hours. On the oil rig there are 3-4 crews alternating shifts. Generally, there are two roughnecks (roustabouts) assigned to each crew.

This list will give you some idea what roughnecks jobs involve:

·          Clearing and Cleaning

·          Paining

·          Rust removal

·          You’ll be in charge of grabbing the pipes, using the tongs, and making or breaking the connections.

·          Operating various types of machinery

·          Operating various types of equipment

·          Connecting sections of pipe

·          Rig loads being moved by the oil rigs crane

·          Generally anything manual that is required

For someone to be successful in securing a roughneck job, they would need to be hardworking and conscientious. These types of jobs are not for the feint hearted. You will need to be a team player and be willing to go that extra mile.

If you want to progress whilst on the rig, then you must be vigilant and try and learn as much as you can. Show initiative. In this type of environment, you get noticed if you show a good work ethic.

What can you expect to earn from an oil roughneck job or a roustabout job?

The average pay for a roughneck seems to be in the region of $40,000 - $55,000 per annum for approx 6 months work. The oil company usually covers medical insurance, free meals, board and room and airfares so virtually all money earned will be yours to keep. Many roughnecks and roustabouts save all their income and end up with a nice large cash sum at the end (kinda makes up for all the hard work and sacrifice)
